Day two hundred and thirty eight.
Saturday. August 27, 2011
One of my favorite things to do is take people to the Konza--especially those who are new to Kansas. I like to hear people describe the calmness of the Flint Hills as their misconstrued ideas about a desolate and unexciting state are relinquished.
Tonight Students for Environmental hosted a sunset hike around the prairie. It was a beautiful scene, and I was able to get to know a few exchanges students from London, Australia, and Germany.

My friend introduced me to the idea of home-made ginger ale. It's quite simple--sugar, yeast, lemon, water, and fresh ginger. The sugar and yeast react in a way to form ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide--the carbonation in certain beverages. After 24-48 hours of fermenting in the closet, the bottle of ginger ale will be moved to the refrigerator.
I'm crossing my fingers that it won't explode.

My roommate and I picked up redworms from a friend's house. The wiggly critters are to be used for our composting bin in the kitchen! They sort of feel like new pets, except we're happy to see them eat our scraps.

water color, ink, charcoal
I came to know this little boy with autism. He was quite a handful much of the time. He scratched and bit me when the proper communication lacked. But when it came to animals, especially horses, the connection he shared with them was magical.
Today I worked on a submission for an upcoming exhibit at the Arts Center in town. It has to do with 'unmasking mental illness.'

Saturday night we camped at Babler State Park. The area was less primitive than we would've hoped or expected, but it was still a fun time in the woods.
This night was the peak night for the Perseid meteor shower, but the full moon and cloudy sky made it hard to catch those burning bits of debris.

I spent the weekend exploring St. Louis with a good friend of mine. Friday night we crawled through tunnels, climbed giant structures welded together around an old warehouse, and received slide-burns. The City Museum is one of the neatest places we've ever been.

Today was a babysitting day. The kids and I molded beads and animal figures out of Crayola air-dry clay.
Ever play with corn starch & water? You must. It's hard to decipher whether the combination is a liquid or solid. When you squeeze or apply some pressure to the goo, it hardens. But when you let it relax in your hands, it runs. The thing creates a grand mess, but it's well worth trying.

Today would've been Brett's 15th birthday. So we celebrated his life with a grand BBQ tailgate in the church parking lot. The place was full of Brett's friends and family.
It was a nice, yet somber gathering.
Later in the day it rained while the sun still shone brightly. I caught a rainbow with my mom's camera.

While at working at the group home this weekend I called my dad asking him for instructions on how to cook a whole chicken. He gave me some tips, but he also forwarded some news that hit me hard. A boy from our church was killed in a car accident Friday night.
I didn't know Brett very well, but I watched him grow from a small boy into a young adult. I knew him as an ornery kid with a boyish attitude and sweet spirit. Brett knew how to make people laugh from the bottom of their bellies. He was an athlete, and his mother & father were so proud.
You'll be missed dearly.

Move-in day!
The apartment is quite old, but it has character. My roomie Chasady and I were contimplating what the walls would say if they could talk. I'm sure they'd reveal some great stories, and ask us to throw on a fresh coat of paint.
It feels nice being a little more independent, and closer to campus. I'm really starting to enjoy coming to the apartment--it's warming. But my parents' home will always be home. They've been so wonderfully supportive on this new journey.
Dear ma, my faithful reader, I thank you.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado
-200 ft high sand hills
-strenuous walking while carrying very heavy dusty duffel bags & gallons of water
-pitching a tent in 60+ mph winds
-impending thunderclouds and lightning
-a great adventure.
My camera fell in the sand and broke shortly after this photo was taken, so the next few days are taken with Brooke's camera.
