Day two hundred and thirty eight.

Saturday. August 27, 2011

One of my favorite things to do is take people to the Konza--especially those who are new to Kansas. I like to hear people describe the calmness of the Flint Hills as their misconstrued ideas about a desolate and unexciting state are relinquished.
Tonight Students for Environmental hosted a sunset hike around the prairie. It was a beautiful scene, and I was able to get to know a few exchanges students from London, Australia, and Germany.

Day two hundred and thirty seven.

Fri. August 26, 2011

Creating a fire in 90 degree weather under trees isn't the best idea, but we had fun gathering with friends nonetheless. After the bonfire, Chasady and I visited the 'Ville'--it was a packed place Friday night.

Day two hundred and thirty six.

Thurs. August 25, 2011

The ECM, or Ecumenical Campus Ministry center holds Real Food Lunch on Thursdays. It's a great time to meet with friends and chow down on some healthy foods.

Baked Eggplant Parmesan, Quinoa and Cucumber Salad with Elderberries, Bok Choy and Chickpeas, and Rice.

Day two hundred and thirty five.

Wed. August 24, 2011

My friend introduced me to the idea of home-made ginger ale. It's quite simple--sugar, yeast, lemon, water, and fresh ginger. The sugar and yeast react in a way to form ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide--the carbonation in certain beverages. After 24-48 hours of fermenting in the closet, the bottle of ginger ale will be moved to the refrigerator.
I'm crossing my fingers that it won't explode.

Day two hundred and thirty four.

Tues. August 23, 2011

The compost from our worm bin is so rich in nutrients that the seeds we've thrown out are starting to sprout, despite the lack of proper sunlight.
I re-planted those sprouts and put them in an old bottle. I think these two little guys are baby apple plants.

Day two hundred and thirty three.

Monday. August 22, 2011

Back to school, back to school.

Day two hundred and thirty two.

Sunday August 21, 2011

Katie is puppy sitting for a bit.

Sunday, August 21, 2011

Day two hundred and thirty one.

It's great to go home home.

Day two hundred and thirty.

Fri. August 19, 2011

Replacement camera came in, finally! I miss my oldie, but this one works too.
And Brooke and I ate some potato, lentil, vegetable, white bean soup.

Day two hundred and twenty nine.

Thurs. August 18, 2011
Today I am 4 inches lighter, and my ends aren't so split.

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Day two hundred and twenty eight.

Wed. August 17, 2011
My roommate and I picked up redworms from a friend's house. The wiggly critters are to be used for our composting bin in the kitchen! They sort of feel like new pets, except we're happy to see them eat our scraps.

Day two hundred and twenty seven.

Tues. August 16, 2011
water color, ink, charcoal

I came to know this little boy with autism. He was quite a handful much of the time. He scratched and bit me when the proper communication lacked. But when it came to animals, especially horses, the connection he shared with them was magical.
Today I worked on a submission for an upcoming exhibit at the Arts Center in town. It has to do with 'unmasking mental illness.'

Day two hundred and twenty five.

Sun. August 14, 2011

Most of today was spent on the road.

Day two hundred and twenty four.

Sat. August 13, 2011
Saturday night we camped at Babler State Park. The area was less primitive than we would've hoped or expected, but it was still a fun time in the woods.
This night was the peak night for the Perseid meteor shower, but the full moon and cloudy sky made it hard to catch those burning bits of debris.

Day two hundred and twenty three.

Fri. August 12, 2011
I spent the weekend exploring St. Louis with a good friend of mine. Friday night we crawled through tunnels, climbed giant structures welded together around an old warehouse, and received slide-burns. The City Museum is one of the neatest places we've ever been.

Day two hundred and twenty two.

Thurs. August 10, 2011
Today was a babysitting day. The kids and I molded beads and animal figures out of Crayola air-dry clay.
Ever play with corn starch & water? You must. It's hard to decipher whether the combination is a liquid or solid. When you squeeze or apply some pressure to the goo, it hardens. But when you let it relax in your hands, it runs. The thing creates a grand mess, but it's well worth trying.

Wed. August 9, 2011

Celebrating a friend's birthday with Foster's and Taboo.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Day two hundred and nineteen.

August. 8, 2011

Somehow, wasps keep entering my room. The tally is now 7. I don't want to kill them, but I also don't want to be friends.

Day two hundred and eighteen.

Sunday, August 7, 2011

Today would've been Brett's 15th birthday. So we celebrated his life with a grand BBQ tailgate in the church parking lot. The place was full of Brett's friends and family.
It was a nice, yet somber gathering.

Later in the day it rained while the sun still shone brightly. I caught a rainbow with my mom's camera.

Day two hundred and seventeen.

Saturday. August 16, 2011

While at working at the group home this weekend I called my dad asking him for instructions on how to cook a whole chicken. He gave me some tips, but he also forwarded some news that hit me hard. A boy from our church was killed in a car accident Friday night.
I didn't know Brett very well, but I watched him grow from a small boy into a young adult. I knew him as an ornery kid with a boyish attitude and sweet spirit. Brett knew how to make people laugh from the bottom of their bellies. He was an athlete, and his mother & father were so proud.
You'll be missed dearly.

Day two hundred and sixteen.

Fri. August. 5, 2011
Since the sand dunes broke my camera--or, since I broke my camera at the dunes--I'll be posting some oldies.

This picture was taken 2 years ago when Brooke and I decided to tie-dye. We need to do that again before classes start.

Day two hundred and fifteen.

Thurs. August 4, 2011

My bamboo plant enjoys looking out the window.

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Day two hundred and fourteen.

Wed. August 3, 2011

Wednesday's are babysitting days--today we did some watercolor.

Day two hundred and thirteen.

Tues. August 2, 2011
It's been a while, 365 blog. My camera's currently being repaired- here's a hello from the webcam!

Day two hundred and twelve.

Monday. August 1, 2011

Move-in day!
The apartment is quite old, but it has character. My roomie Chasady and I were contimplating what the walls would say if they could talk. I'm sure they'd reveal some great stories, and ask us to throw on a fresh coat of paint.

It feels nice being a little more independent, and closer to campus. I'm really starting to enjoy coming to the apartment--it's warming. But my parents' home will always be home. They've been so wonderfully supportive on this new journey.
Dear ma, my faithful reader, I thank you.

Day two hundred and eleven.

Sunday. July 31, 2011

Western Kansas clouds on the drive back from Colorado.

Day two hundred and ten.

Saturday. July 30, 2011

Pointing out the 14er's around the Black Canyon. Rebecca is a terrific friend & guide.
So glad we could visit.

A magical field in Crested Butte--Wildflower Capital of Colorado.

Day two hundred and nine.

Friday. July 29, 2011

Hiking the Dillon Pinnacles

Day two hundred and eight.

Thursday. July 28, 2011

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado
-200 ft high sand hills
-strenuous walking while carrying very heavy dusty duffel bags & gallons of water
-pitching a tent in 60+ mph winds
-impending thunderclouds and lightning
-a great adventure.

My camera fell in the sand and broke shortly after this photo was taken, so the next few days are taken with Brooke's camera.

Day two hundred and seven.

Wed. July 27, 2011

Went out for some vanilla shakes with the cool kiddos I watch on Wednesdays.

Monday, August 1, 2011

Day two hundred and six.

Tues. July 26, 2011

I've been thinking about studying abroad in Wales next year.
