Day one hundred and eighty.

Thurs. June 30, 2011
" Friend, you are a divine mingle-mangle of guts and stardust. So hang in there! "
- Frank Capra

This picture wasn't taken today, but it made me think of some encouraging words the old American film director Frank Capra once shared. I found the quote on a lovely little card I purchased at the Luna record store in Indianapolis a few days ago.

We have the capacity feel so much pain, love, compassion, sympathy, worry. And this to me is all the more a demonstration of God's mysterious companioniship in a world which is greater than we know. And while these emotions we can feel are incredibly beautiful, they come with their share of struggles. So hang in there.

Her favorite drink is the Jumbo Margarita at Carlos--so I had to try one. My rasberry was blended and jam-packed with sweetness.

I visited my wonderful friend who lives on the border of Indiana & Kentucky. He showed me around a number of cool places in Louisville, one of my favorites being the 21c Museum Hotel.
Text Rain (1999)
Camille Utterback & Romy Achituv (American/Israeli)
Video, projection software

"Text Rain is an interactive installation in which participants use the familiar instrument of their bodies, to do what seems magical—to lift and play with falling letters that do not really exist. In the Text Rain installation participants stand or move in front of a large projection screen. On the screen they see a mirrored video projection of themselves in black and white, combined with a color animation of falling letters. Like rain or snow, the letters appears to land on participants’ heads and arms. The letters respond to the participants’ motions and can be caught, lifted, and then let fall again. The falling text will ‘land’ on anything darker than a certain threshold, and ‘fall’ whenever that obstacle is removed. If a participant accumulates enough letters along their outstretched arms, or along the silhouette of any dark object, they can sometimes catch an entire word, or even a phrase. The falling letters are not random, but form lines of a poem about bodies and language. ‘Reading’ the phrases in the Text Rain installation becomes a physical as well as a cerebral endeavor."

Today we visited our second cousin (I think that's the relation) and her wild kids. The neighborhood ice cream truck made it into today's picture. Mm, I hadn't seen one in years! It brought back some nice summery memories.

On the road again to visit some relatives in Indiana.

Day one hundred and seventy three.

Thursday, June 23, 2011

During the day my dad and I spent some time on the good ol' family raft. We would wait for the perfect wave to creep up on us and then float on in until it came crashing down.

The ocean beat us up pretty good--I joke that this is nature's way of getting back at the human species for all of our wasteful habits. The waves were perhaps my favorite part of the Panama City Beach--so brutal and loud, yet strangely calm.

We spent our last evening in Florida walking through the hot spots near shops, bars, and local restaurants. We also had some caricatures made of us, which was pretty entertaining.

I feel like I should say a few things about Florida (specifically Panama City), but for now I'm burnt and sleepy.

I do really enjoy family time.

Day one hundred and sixty nine.

At Warner park we ate ice cream cake, played frisbee, and blew bubbles under the setting sun. It was a wonderful day to have a birthday, with wonderful people to help me celebrate.

Two times a week I go to the Beach Museum to help out with their summer art programs. Today the kids made their owns masks. It's fun to help them with the little things--tying strings together, hot gluing sequence, finding certain colored feathers. It's also fun to see them marvel at their creation. I'm amazed by their skills.

Later in the night friends and family went to a local bar for some birthday celebration time.
And so the countdown began. At midnight I turned 21 and received several drinks--something lemon drop, summery, tuaca, apple, sour? I don't know. Whatta night of dancing and fun.

I've been working on a canvas these past few weeks. The painting is for my friend's ma to hang in her office room. It's my first time painting a canvas this large, so it's taking me a while--but I enjoy it. Whenever I get into that groove, I could paint for hours. It's just a matter of getting there.

Day one hundred and sixty six.

I watched my friend's two really great kids for most of the afternoon. We spent some time in the backyard looking for four-leaf clovers, and we each found one! It was awesome.

I believe videos and pictures will never be able to adequately depict what a person sees in real life. One must experience the world with 'glittering eyes' as Roald Dahl suggests--not focus so much on trying to make the documentation look good. I say this because I can get lost in trying to capture the moment rather than soak it in fully.

Still, I will always enjoy taking pictures of family, friends, and new experiences. They're nice memories to look back on. I made this video today: A few of my favorite clips compiled to the tune of 'Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second.' Some clips go as far back as 2005. If I were to compile all of my favorite moments caught on camera into a video similar to this one, it would probably be twice as long as the Lord of the Rings trilogy; however, I won't be doing that any time soon.
Enjoy, my friends.

Good night!

Day one hundred and sixty three.

These bright red lilies by our front door were a nice reminder of Pentecost--celebrated fifty days after Easter, this day reminds me that the Holy Spirit is still burning like a fire.

I borrowed this bit of C.S. Lewis from a website:

“When I was an undergraduate in Cambridge, if I were to say that Christ came to me, I should be using conventional words that would carry no precise meaning. For Christ comes to men and women in different ways. When I try to record the experience at that time, I use the imagery of the Vision of the Holy Grail. It seemed to me like that. There was, however, no sensible vision. There was just the room, with its shabby furniture and the fire burning in the grate, and the red shaded lamp on the table. But the room was filled by a presence that in a strange way was both about me and within me like a light or warmth. I was overwhelming possessed by someone who was not myself. And yet, I felt more myself than ever before. I was filled with intense happiness and almost unbearable joy as I had never known before or never known since. And overall, there was a deep sense of peace and security and certainty.” This was Pentecost for C.S. Lewis.

Mm, Orange Leaf.
In case you're wondering (I always have), the difference between frozen yogurt and ice cream is this:
-Frozen yogurt is a lower fat ice-cream alternative.
-Ice cream was first introduced in 1776. Frozen Yogurt- somewhere around the 1970's
-Frozen yogurt can contain 'Live Active Cultures', or healthy bacteria, while ice cream can not.

Day one hundred and fifty nine.

Summer evenings are lovely, especially when a cool breeze breaks the monotony of 100 degree afternoons. These past few nights the Sun has been looking like a bright red bouncy ball in the sky.

The fam + uncle Andy visited Pillsbury Crossing and we all took turns jumping off the rope swing. The water's packed with snakes, I'm sure--but it still made for a refreshing afternoon.

Day one hundred and fifty seven.

Excuse the un-proportionality of of this image!

Andy is visiting us from Indianapolis this week. My dad and Andy grew up together, and they're still buddies today. Out of all the vacation hot spots to choose from, we're glad Kansas holds a special place in Andy's heart. Welcome again to 100 degrees, potentiality for tornadoes, good talk & tasty meals!

Day one hundred and fifty six.

My mom and I went to the Art Center to throw some porcelain.

We are no experts, but we still enjoy it. My mom made a few vases, and I spinned some bowls. Next comes the firing!

We are the clay, you are the potter;
we are all the work of your hand.

Day one hundred and fifty five.

I've been seeing so much of God's goodness in coversations, growing vegetables, learning from parents, learning from struggles, and just small and large instances that seem to connect in really cool ways.
Tonight Brooke & I listened to JJ Heller live at the Wareham. As Brooke said to me, JJ's voice is like ice cream. Here's a little video from tonight, if it decides to upload.

JJ and Dave Heller are a perfect pair, with a baby girl on the way.

Sixty days later

my peas may have only sprouted two pods, but I'm still so proud of them.

My updating is becoming less frequent--I'm surprised the blog has made it this far. We've been having some extreme weather lately--a mix of tornadoes, hail, floods and thunderstorms. Which reminds me of a book I read when I was younger called, "The Sky is Falling."

We must go tell the king.

Wed. June 1, 2011
June is one of my favorite months.

Today I missed Camp Courageous--an incredible camp in Iowa for people with various special needs & disabilities. I worked there as a summer staff person last summer. Some times were challenging, but still so good. Many wonderful moments with counselors & campers.

Today I helped lead some recreation games under the hot summer sun. It was good to run around a bit. If only we could harness that kid energy.

Today we celebrate Memorial Day!

The weather was beautiful, perfect for spending most of the day outside. My parents had friends over for lunch, and my dad grilled some tasty hamburgers.

And I found out Caesar can do cool tricks with his tongue.
