Heather & Josh have dated since the 5th grade. That's 10 years! We've shared some pretty great middle school memories with this woman, and Brooke and I were honored to be at their wedding.

Day one hundred and forty six.
Not that I really needed another expensive hole in my ear, but my friend and I decided to get piercings after work. I went for the 'rook', and my friend got one through the cartilage. I don't always understand why humans do these kinds of things. My jaw is sore, which is strange. But I still had a good time connecting with my co-worker & talking with the man who stabbed a needle through my rook. We talked about his garden and how drinking more water & eating his home-grown vegetables has made a great difference in his life. It was neat.

Day one hundred and forty two.
My dad is ultimate Mr. Build-it, Fix-it, Make-it, Cook-it. I've realized this more over the years as I've watched him take on large house projects--like our enclosed garage, and wooden deck with stairs. Today my dad spruced up his old Peugeot bicycle for me to ride. It's a basic road bike with a high seat and skinny tires. My dad says he drove it to pick up my mom for dates, which means it's been through some years. I'm excited to put it to use.

Day one hundred and forty.
No-trash challenge update. Mm, so I noticed I never wrapped up my 40 days without waste. The first few weeks started out well, but then I grew tired of saving every piece of non-recycable scrap of something. I'm still trying to decide what to make out of this accumulated garbage, which really isn't garbage at all.

Certain saved items have come in handy. Fruit & yogurt containers make nice holders for beginning plants, and my Earl Grey Tea box now holds my Gouache paint.
The point of my five weeks without waste: to be a little more mindful of what & how much is being sent to landfills and oceans every second of the day--and to do something about it on an individual level.

I could prattle on about recycling, composting, and the great pacific garbage patch. But maybe, hopefully, people already know environmental degradation is a problem. God's Earth is a beautiful little ball of dust suspended among billions of stars & galaxies. It'd be nice to keep it alive and clean.

Day one hundred and thirty eight.
Today was a little wacky, but that's okay.

Tonight involved some water & some color.
A few days ago my friend re-introduced me to the amazingness of Wendell Berry. So I've been reading one of his books, The Art of the Common Place. Wendell Berry is simple & tranquil, while providing really great insight to the agrarian way of life.
The Peace of Wild Things
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Day one hundred and thirty five.
Me and some friends paddled 12 miles down the Big Blue Kansas river. It took five frigid hours to complete the trip. My arms are feelin' the burn! The wind was cold, the water was cold, and one of the guys accidentally fell in. Yikes! But it was all still very fun--we stopped along a sandy bank for lunch & enjoyed seeing the different wildlife.

Man, I'm behind on my posts! My powercord died, so I couldn't use my laptop much this week. In case you ever need a new powercord--I would suggest buying one online. I saved $60!

Work went well this weekend. It was kind of chilly today, compared to last week, but it was still nice. I took the guys out to the baseball fields to practice for tomorrow's big game.

One of my friends uses his basement as a venue for different bands to come and play. So Besty and I checked out the show. It was an interesting experience--as I'm sure most everyone was on something. The night was good, though. We had some laughs, and met some neat people.

Time to leave the nest! My dear friend and I think we've found an apartment for the fall. One that's especially close to campus, which will be handy.

Day one hundred and twenty seven.
Two pictures today!
left: this morning I ran the FAAST 5k with some folks on campus. (Fairtrade. Awareness. Africa's Sustainability. Together). The event was held by k-state's Fair Trade Awareness to raise money for organizations like the CYEC (Children and Youth Empowerment Center), and CTC International (Comfort the Children Int.) I don't know a ton about these organizations, but I'd like to learn. There are always such cool ways to get involved & help out.
right: first strawberries of the season! Delishusss.

Day one hundred and twenty five.
Sorry, my camera was MIA for a while. I found it again this morning sitting in the bottom of my backpack. I was pretty frantic.

It rained early this morning, which made our backyard look and sound like a tropical rainforest--aside from highway noises. This flower here is a Peony. Ants & insects love to crawl on them because the buds release a sweet sap. Myth has it that the ants "tickle" the bud to help it open, but the flower would bloom regardless.
I like what thisgardenisillegal.com has to say about it.
Mother Nature very rarely does something without a very good reason. Peonies secrete a sweet sap when they are in bud, which attracts the ants. The ants come for dessert but find a second helping of harmful insects. The peonies want the ants to come so that they have some protection. Pretty smart thinking, if you ask me.
---
Oh, and an update on my pleurisy, which I somehow contracted this past Sat/Sun. I'm feeling much better, with hardly any pain & minimal breathing troubles.

My mom & I ate some soup from the Empty Bowls project on Monday (this is a bowl from last year). Young & old people around town got together at the Art Center before May 2nd to make the ceramic bowls. They were then glazed and sold for $10. Everyone who bought one of these 'Empty Bowls' could fill them with yummy soup on Monday. All proceeds will benefit local soup kitchens, which is super cool.

Day one hundred and twenty one.
I was having some troubles & pain while breathing during the night, so my loving mother took me to the ER very early this morning. After some x-rays and waiting a while, the doctor determined that I have Pleuritis--inflamation of the lining of the lungs (the pleura). I'm not sure what caused it, but the virus could last for a week or so. Thankful it's not pneumonia!
In the evening, my friend and I went to see the Belleza Latina put on by the Hispanic American Leadership Organization at K-State. The pageant included a talent competition, swimsuit & evening wear competition, and on-stage question.

Arbor Day! These are my friends Betsy and Mark standing next to Mark's portable solar panel. He transports the panel to events that need power, and it works amazingly well. Mark provided us with some energy for our PA system to take our re-scheduled campus Earth Day photo.
